So your magic isn’t working, and you can’t figure out why. Your intentions are fully set and you’re putting them way out there, but it’s not really that simple, is it? Magic, manifestation, spell, prayer, wish, whatever you want to call it, is basically the art of getting what you want by influencing the world around you, and it’s often made to look easy. But if that’s the case, why does it fail so often?
This ancient art of believing things into existence, I’m going to call it magic, has been watered down so much nowadays that it seems all we have to do is blink and we can have anything we ever dreamed of, but luckily that’s not the case, and there are five big fat reasons why your spell didn’t work…
Let’s start the countdown…
5. You Don’t Believe in Yourself
When I say this, I don’t mean you should go pat yourself on the back, stick on a gold star and try harder, I mean:
Deep down, you don’t feel worthy of the end result.
Let’s say you want a new job and you do a spell (or manifestation, spell, prayer, wish, again: whatever you want to call it), but deep down you don’t believe that you’re good enough for that job; you think it’s out of your league, and the whole reason you’re doing a spell in the first place is because you don’t believe you could get it without magic, well then your chances of being successful are pretty slim. Here’s why:
For starters, the Law of Attraction people say that for a manifestation to work, you have to believe that “you already have the thing you want” – now to most of us that’s an odd concept and it brings up hilarious images of pulling up to a drive-through in your imaginary Ferrari that you “already totally have” (or for me it does anyway), but it doesn’t really work like that (and if it did, the world would be a much stranger place…)
What the Law of Attraction teaches (in a pretty simplified way) is that you have to believe yourself worthy of that thing you want, that you already have, except you don’t have it yet, because you don’t believe in yourself.
Ok, basically for your magic to be successful you need to know in your entire being, that you can do it. Can you do that job? Is it made for you? Then rock up to that interview with a positive mind-set. You are going to get that job because you deserve it and you’re completely and utterly right for it.
And secondly, on a completely non-magical but equally important note: if you don’t believe yourself worthy of that job, it will show, and you won’t get it anyway.
Knowing that you don’t believe in yourself as much as you first thought is the easy part, finding out the reasons why you don’t believe in yourself is another, deep and scary, matter entirely, and a topic for another day.
Ok, so what if you do totally believe in yourself and you’re still not smelling the sweet scent of magical success? Then maybe…
4. You’re Not Behind it 100%
Have you ever tried to hex someone? Most of us witchy folk have somewhere down the line, and most of us usually fail. Why is that?
Because deep down, no matter how much you hate that bitch, you’re a nice person.
And nice people don’t try to bring others down, no matter how much they hurt you. We don’t really want that horrible so-and-so to get leprosy and live forever as an outcast, we’re just upset. Which leads to my next point.
3. Your Emotions Are Out of Whack
Whenever you practice magic (or insert favoured term here), you’re using a strength of will so powerful that it actually affects the physical world around you, and while we don’t have enough room to get into a detailed discussion of what magic actually is right here, I can tell you that your emotions fuel it.
There’s a thin line in magic between not enough emotion so the spell goes pfft and falls flat (usually the times that feel like ticking off a checklist or making a sandwich – bread, tick, lettuce, tick, head of a raven… tick…), and “WOAH NOW my emotions are spurting out of me like the fiery horsemen of the apocalypse and I can’t stop, hellllpppp!”
Oddly, the latter is actually preferable. It’s far easier to work with the emotions you have, rather than dig them up from whatever depths they’re hiding in, because a lack of emotion usually means a lack of desire for the outcome, so the more anguish the better. Even the firiest and most terrifying feelings can be of use, especially those kinds, but only when you can tame them.
Think of emotions as your magical fuel. When you learn to channel them into something, you have an incredible resource at your disposal.
How you do this is up to you but may I suggest deep breaths, regular meditation, aaaaaand…
2. You Need Practice
Magic is just another creative outlet, like art, music, writing, dance etc. – and as outlined in the previous point: the most potent kind always stems from suffering.
You just have to look at the lives of the world’s most famous painters to see it, though I’m not suggesting you go as far as to cut one of your own ears off à la Van Gogh…
But there’s more to it than an (un)healthy dose of emotion (and whatever the tipple of choice is for artists nowadays…). There’s another necessary half to the story of wild, untamed creativity that bubbles at the fountain of feelings, and I apologise in advance because it’s not nearly as fun…
Yup folks, everything takes practice. You may have a magical well of bubbling fuel ready to power your manifestations into a shiny new car, but if you don’t know how to put the petrol in that car – you ain’t going nowhere kid.
Start small. Just like you would if you were practising art, or music, or writing. A complete newbie wouldn’t begin by trying to write a novel, or play a sonata (thank god), they’d start with a sentence or a note, then move up to a chord. Magic is the same.
The more you practice, the better you get. Don’t be trying to raise the dead on day 1 (or ever for that matter… just no).
So let’s just say you’ve ticked all the previous boxes and still no luck, what’s the deal then?
1. It’s Just Not Meant to Be
I’m sorry, I know that’s a bit of a crap one to end on, cos what can you really do about it?
Well, nothing. Because the universe said so. And the sooner you come to terms with the fact that the universe knows better than you and will f**k you over quite regularly in order to get you to where you need to be, the sooner you’ll be able to chillax and enjoy your life.
So next time you find that your spell didn’t work, remember that it might not actually be in the right direction for you. There might be something better on its way.
And one last little secret for you: If you can do just that, and learn to enjoy your life and take it as it comes, you’ll be a crazy magical powerhouse of a bad witch without even trying.
You’re welcome 😉
